2. Black Panther’s Film Diversity

The sequel to Black Panther has had its debut in theaters in these past few weeks and it is being acclaimed as the most diverse film in the Marvel Universe. Not only is everyone in the film a person of color, but all previous actors returned as well as new ones. This is by far the best way to say farewell and show our gratitude for Chadwick Boseman whom we lost over a year ago.

On November 21, Todd and Julie Christley were finally both sentenced due to their tax fraud case that began during last year. Todd has been sentenced to 12 years in prison and his wife Julie has been sentenced to 7 years in jail. Though I love their show, why couldn’t they just pay their taxes considering all the money they made from their reality show and their business of flipping houses and such. Sources say that the show will continue just without the parents.

Reality Television

The first show that I will be critiquing is a Children’s Reality Show called Dance Moms. Dance Moms became an interest of mine when I keep seeing pieces of the episodes on Facebook Watch and ultimately my roommate and me discussing things about the show.

The show Dance Moms is centered around the original seven girls: Maddie, Mackenzie, Chloe, Brooke and Paige, Nia, and Kendall at the Abby Lee Dance Studio. Though at the time I was currently on season one, again, I will be influenced to further watch from seeing the girls on all social platforms all grown up and the fact that the owner (Abby Lee) was paralyzed due having cancer. At first, I felt bad, but then watching the show on and on and seeing the other girls’ outlooks of Abby Lee and the way that she diminished their confidence and ultimately made most of the steer away from dance altogether.

The demographics that this show has are those who have seen the dancers online bashing their horrible dance teacher and want to know more. Another demographic that the show has are those who may or may not dance but are only interested in the dance competition/ competitive aspect of the show. Then there’s me who learned about the show through Facebook clips that also is intrigued to why the teacher treated them like that and interested in the dance competitive parts.

One good thing about the show far as who’s watching is that it is not tailored to one race by having one girl on team who was African American to which I am, and I always wanted to see her succeed more than others because I felt like she was overlooked due to her skin color and the softness at which she danced. This is something that I feel like the show failed on, though there were other girl of color that came after her but did not stay long due to the same issues and being overlooked.

In my opinion, this show succeeded if it did for eight seasons, because us as viewers were watching these girls grow up online and on the television show. Before, during, and after the show, I was always super interested as to what the girls are doing now and what do they look like all grown up because I feel like I watched them elevate in their career and into womanhood.

Like I mentioned before, I was drawn into the show from Facebook watch to which is a part of Facebook where they show clips of shows, but also skit and videos from other platforms. The producers also succeeded with promoting the show through social media by showing the girls at the dance competitions where you could literally come and watch them in person and potentially meet them, so ultimately, they helped them to produce some fans. Also, though the show has been canceled since twenty nineteen, it is talked of ultimately because of the mistreatment and favoritism of the dance teacher and the bickering that it caused between the moms.

The next Show that I will be analyzing is a Reality Drama Show with various sub-shows called Black Ink Crew (Tattooing Show). Black Ink Crew has several subs shows like: Black Ink Crew New York, Black Ink Crew Chicago, and Black Ink Crew Compton. My favorite of the bunch would be Black in Crew Chicago.

Like I mentioned before, Black in Crew Chicago is my favorite of the show franchise because it the only one of the three that I have watched from the first airing of the show till now. The character on the show Charlamagne, Don, Phor, Danielle, kat, and Van are the original cast members though only two remain due to drama, fights, and disagreements with the owner Ryan.

Even though there is a lot of drama among the castmates in the show, there are still moments where they are a family, or they are excited for a celebrity client to come to get tattooed by them, or just a simple interaction doing a tattoo in general in the comfort of their own booth.

From my observation of the show, it is mostly tailored to those who either love drama, interested in tattoos, or both. I am interested in both because I have no drama of my own, so why not watch theirs unfold, plus I have watched the characters from the beginning to now and even watched the ones who are no longer associated with the show.

This show has gone on as long as it has because when one subgroup show goes off, another is ready to follow right behind it. The producers have succeeded with keeping the viewers interested by having an ongoing line up between the three shows, like how Love and Hip Hop used to be before covid.

I originally found out about the show from watching parts of the first of the series Black Ink Crew New York and then from commercials, I saw that they would be making another but in a different location with different castmates to where I began watching.

The producers have also succeeded in making sure that we viewers get to see that though there is a drama within each of those shows, they all often come together from their shows to either host events, settle differences, or even have a big get-together of all the castmates.

Social Media plays its role within the show because after that season is over, that’s when all the drama online starts with the castmates throwing shade towards one another and giving their opinions on what was shown to the world. In addition, I follow all of them on various platforms to see how they’re doing and plus, most of them do some awesome tattoos and their work is phenomenal depending on who it is.

Lastly, if I could produce my own reality program, it had something to do with the insides and outs of a college student. I wouldn’t host it here at SAU only because the demographic that I would like my show to have would be more so tailored to people that I could relate too more not in particularly the race concept, but also those who are having the same struggles that I’ve had in college. Also, the college of my choice for the show would have to be very well-known across the nation and very active in their community and on campus.

Before arrival:

I decided to bring along one of my friends to enjoy the movie with me and I knew that offering to pay for the ticket would sway her to join me. We decided to go to Cinema fourteen in Eldorado because I can often be a lazy driver though Texarkana’s theatre’s style, look, and food is better than Eldorado’s.

Deciding on the film (Friday October 30 at 3:45) :

After a short deliberation, my friend and I decided on the film “Woman King” due to the theatre mostly shows horror films and that’s something that I am not intrigued by. I had seen many advertisements for the film, but I did not think it would be worth my money due to the little that was shown in the advertisement video.

First food stop at two fifteen:

Due to my friend and I left campus around 2:00 knowing the showing of the movie did not start until 3:45, we decided to head to Yamato and get some sushi and a small appetizer because we had not eaten that whole day. Shocker! The sushi was so good that we were ultimately rushing through traffic to get back to the theatre which was about 5 minutes away. We were still late though!

Finally arriving at the theatre:

As stated previously, we were rushing to arrive at the theatre as well as rushing to get into the actual theatre for our desired film.

Outside appearance:

While rushing inside, I did notice the feeling and nostalgia that the theatre brought me referring to my childhood when I and my family would visit there regularly. The second thought I had was that there’s no way that I thought it was so huge as a child, to now being an adult and saying, “This theater is really small compared to others that I’ve been to.” The last thing that came to mind was that this theatre is getting old far as the décor on the outside and the parking lot.

Inside Appearance:

Once we were in the theatre, we decided to also get another round of snacks and food because we’re foodies and we felt like the movie experience wouldn’t be complete without some food accompanying the film. I knew the prices to which of food beforehand, but I soon remember that I’m young and $13 will come back to me one day, so why trip about it?

Entering the showing room:

Since were late getting there and late getting in to see the advertisements, we missed the first few minutes of the film and we were expecting to be stared at once walking in with our food, but to our surprise, they were about five others there with us to which three out of five were African Americans and the other two were Caucasian.

The Actual Film:

Maybe we did not understand the first plot of the film due to us entering kind of late, but we were confused for at least the first ten minutes of the film and almost decided to call it wraps and just leave. Gladly, after those ten minutes, the film began to intrigue us when we saw (Nanisca) Mrs. Viola Davis as the leader of her group of young ladies in her strong stance with glowing muscles and natural hair. This was a head turner for us because we had never seen her in an action kind of film before and she killed that role!

The Plot:

After the confusion was rested, the film was still all over the place, but we understood every switch that came with each scene. The whole tribe consisted of mostly women whom she would train to defend themselves against men and to also become the most proficient warriors which was a major problem in her life, due to being sold and used by men without her consent or permission. The young ladies that she was training also were previously traded or thrown away.

The Theater Experience:

Though I have been to this theatre a million times in my lifespan, now that I had to observe everything around me for a grade, crazily, I noticed everything that I may have not being a little kid like the overpriced food options (because I was not buying it with my own money), creepy looking characters plastered by the bathrooms, and the feeling of going to the bathroom alone and making sure no one is in there to snatch me up!

The extended theater experience:

The theater itself is still a nice size like I felt it was as a child. The theatre was not overly dirty (maybe because it was the first showing), the lights on the steps helped us, old people, to see the actual steps, the quality of the film far as high definition or so was pretty good, and the general audience there was actually pretty humorous, though the film was not a comedy everyone including me and my guest had times were we busted out laughing because we are all extremely goofy individuals.

My overall feeling:

The movie had acts and ideals of trading and selling slaves in the movie to which is not something that I would often look at, but the overall plot tied everything together and it all seemed to make sense. I was very impressed, and I feel as though everyone should experience the film and potentially go early on a Friday afternoon if you do not like big crowds of people.

The aftermath:

Since I am a kid at heart, I had to pull out my dollars and play some of the games before leaving. The first and only game that I played was Guitar Hero. In my younger days, I could beat anyone, anytime, of any day, but that Friday around 6:00, I sucked! I don’t know if my fingers have gotten bigger or if I potentially was overconfident and not that good as a child.

Final Thoughts:

The film and experience were a ten out of ten and you should totally go see it! I am still a little messed up about using more than just the $13 dollars that I told you guys about on food, gas, and the delicious sushi, but cool beans!
